Sharing Economy in Indonesia (Online Tranportation vs Conventional Transportation)

Sharing economy, perhaps you lately often hear the term. In this age of accelerating technology businesses, as now, the business model of sharing economy is seen as more profitable than the conventional business model. The principle of unity that is built by the same goal making the sharing economy is often applied by many startup.

In Indonesia itself has a lot of companies, especially startups build their business using the business model of sharing economy. For example is Nebengers.com that utilize GPS technology to pick up passengers who happen to have the same trip with the rider. The driver earn additional income, while passengers get the ease of transportation experience.

Reporting from CNNIndonesia.com, according to Andrias Ekoyuono, Business Development Ideosource, sharing revival economy in Indonesia is actually supported by many factors, among others:

  • Internet access. Advances in technology, particularly the Internet, provide a means of exchanging information that is wide enough. This makes the givers and recipients to find each other. Its scope was not limited to who or what is more intense and peer-to-peer.
  • The mobile device. Again, technological advances become one of the supporters of this business model is growing rapidly. The mobile device is easy to carry anywhere to provide easy access to that information.
  • Emerging marketplace platform. This is the most important thing according to Andrias. The formation of a new marketplace allows one to create new relationships that no longer form of consumer-corporate-workers, but be consumer-entrepreneurial provider of products and services. Thus, so the market is wide open and certainly more specific.

Advantages :

  • Andrias said, if the share of this economic model goes well, consumers will benefit from the speed of fulfillment, diversity of choice and competitive prices.
  • Cheaper rates can be given because, in general, providers of goods or services are individuals or small entrepreneurs who have a lower cost structure than the corporation.
  • “The system also creates a lot of jobs and small entrepreneurs who have access to the consumer as well as the opportunity to further develop in accordance with hard work and quality,” said Andrew.

Controversy :

  • Behind the welcome given by the people, the existence of online ojek and online taxi presence also get a challenge. Their presence often makes conventional ojek and conventionl taxi drivers angry because it was considered to be a rival.
  • In different areas of Jakarta and Tangerang, anti against online ojek also appear. In fact, a motorcycle taxi rank did not hesitate to display banners refusal to reject motorcycle online presence in a particular place.
  • Looking at it, Government is not silent. Government and community leaders felt the need to explain the advantages and benefits for the long-term presence of the online ojek and online taxi itself.

My Opinion :

We are now living in a digital era which is everything gonna be faster, easier and digitalized. The existence of mobile applications such as Gojek, Grab and Uber have becoming a new solution to experience ease of using transportation. In some cases that was happening in Indonesia is about conflict between conventional ojek and online ojek driver on the street. The conventional ojek driver feel that their income has decreased since the existing of online ojek in Indonesia.

What actually happen is some of them (conventional ojek driver) can’t adapt with a new technology. If they can’t adapt with this kind of technology, i think they will die slowly and will have an economic problem in their family. So that, they have to be more informed about the advantages of using this kind of technology to maintain their life in a future.
